IIS ‘P. Mazzone’ is a secondary high school in Roccella Jonica, a small town in Calabria, South
Italy. It consists of a ‘Liceo Scientifico’ which includes an option of Applied Sciences and provides
scientific, human and technical studies and of an ‘Istituto Tecnico Industriale’ which prevalently
provides technical sudies and covers four courses (mechanics, electronics, chemics, transport and
logistics).
Over 740 students from very different condiciones and profiles attend the school and it has more
than 100 staff persons. The school is a very dynamic one: students participate in sports, scientific
and cultural events, English courses, astronomy, music, seminars in physics and philosophy,
journalism and local heritage.
In our school there are also In-room ( 3Dprinters and robotics), Stem lab, Early STEM lab, Science
lab, Chemistry and biology lb, Physics lab. Our students receive english preparation in their first
year during the five year education process. Our school students learn to use foreign language not
only for English lessons and communication, but also for disciplines such as information
Technologies, science and mathemctics, VET disciplines. During their education, STEM study is
essential with STEM education; students learn how to integrate the achievements in science,
maths, information and Communication Technologies courses with each other as well as with other
disciplines and thus think multi-dimensionally. Working with their teammates, they produce
technology and engineering based solution to the problems of 21st century life presented in these
lesson. STEM supports young people to develop their Project based learning, analytical thinking,
problem solving skills and creativity that they need in order to be part of the innonative future. In
addition, they work to support the STEM program in our 3D and robotic technolgy workshop in our
school.
Further, the school has always carried out competence development of teachers through training
courses. It is our task to integrate every student in the culture to which he/she belongs: it is
fundamental to us to ensure that each of our pupils, whatever his/her personal aptitudes may be, is
exposed to the linguistic, literary, philosophical, anthropological, scientific, artistic and religious
knowledge. All the teachers and the staff jointly make every effort to improve the quality of their
teaching and to meet students’ needs.
